misunderstanding between words in Beverly Hillbillies

The words are petroleum, oil, wildcatting, telephone, airfield, big bird, million dollars.

Petroleum - in the first episode where the man came in and told them about the petroleum company would pay money for the oil in the swamp. The Hillbillies were confused and didn't know what to think why the company wanted the oil or waste in the swamp. The hillbillies thought it was waste and wanted it gone.

Oil- the hillbillies thought the oil in the swamp was waste and did not want the waste in their swamp.

Wildcatting - the hillbillies thought the man from the petroleum company was going to chase wild cats but he meant, American term for a person who drills wildcat wells, which are oil wells drilled in areas not known to be oil fields.

Telephone - the hillbillies had not idea what the man was talking about with the word telephone, they thought he was crazy and weird.

Airfield - the hillbillies thought the man meant a field in the air floating when the man asked where was the nearby airfield.

Big Bird - the hillbillies thought the helicopter was a big bird in the sky when they saw it and tried to shoot it down and they hit it and made it land.

Million Dollars - the hillbillies did not know what to think when the man said he would pay them in million dollars because the hillbilly knew about silver dollar, coins, and dollars but did not know about a million dollar amount the petroleum man meant.

Semiotics

In this website showing semiotics from pictures of pipes, happiness, and more.

Semiotics is a tradition of thought known for calling attention to the formal structures of signification, of meaning-making, in culture. In so far as it can be used to reveal the arbitrary or constructed character of the meanings we use in our everyday lives, semiotics is also a form of social criticism. In the pictures shown in the pages of the semiotics from the website, the pictures show the object and that is it. For example, there is a picture of a pipe and says this is not a pipe in another language under it meaning that it is a picture of a pipe and not an actual pipe.

Lecture Material

From Word to Printed Page: When some one tells another a story from their own words it is understandable and when that person puts it on paper or printed page to tell other people about it without saying out loud, some people would not be into the story as if they were being told the story out loud. And back in the day some people could not read so it would of been harder for the people who could not read to read the story.
From Printed Page to Screen: When most of the people back in the old days could read and tell stories, they were able to get more stories or facts around to everyone without saying them out loud. When technology came along, people who did not know how to use technology was stumped and could not figure out how to use the technology to read about what ever it was they was reading.
From Broadcast Media to New Media: Broadcast media is what most people watch on the TV in the morning or after noon to know what the news or the broadcasters are telling the community about. New media is the media that people find out with new technologies and find the media faster than waiting on what the TV stations will air to be seen by viewers.

becoming screen literate

To me in the article, the Arthur is saying that the technology is changing and that people are becoming more influential to go along with the change of technology. People are watching anything on screens every where they can. I agree with him on this because I know I watch movies and short clips on my phone and watch tv on my phone when I am working out sometimes. This article does not make me feel any different because I grew up in this technology era and going into the technology field for a career. My opinion to this is for every hour watching tv or short clips while not doing anything, then that person should go exercise for an hour to keep the balance in their diet.

The Long Tail

I just read The Long Tail from Smarter Comics. To me the comic started out with the old times when there was no digital media and then went into a college or high school kids room and talked about how they have not had time without digital media. Then the comic goes into talking about the city falling and having a new world under neath the city. And goes on to more. If you want to read it, then click the URL link up top and state what you want to think about it. A big showing in this comic is that it shows how technologies have becoming better by years.
